How To Fireproof Your Home

With all the wildfires and fires brought on by different factors, do you know how to protect your house from these disasters? While there are many products in the market that are fire retardants, the tips below are natural solutions to help fireproof your home.
Keep Your Home and Property Safe

Opt for metal or tile roofing. Both of these types of roof can last for a long time, but most of all, they have the ability to resist fire.

For home exterior, use stone or brick. If you like the appearance of cedar shakes, make sure you add stone or brick at the bottom part of the house. Keep in mind that cedar shakes can be flammable.

Apply paints that are fire retardants. One efficient solution is to mix sand to the paint. The effect you get is a rough texture. Whether you like it or not, it can protect your home from fire.

Wet your roof. Embers and sparks can easily stick to your roof. If your roof is wet, it can extinguish these flying elements.

Wet down any materials that are made of wood outside your home. In the case of a moving fire, a wet wood can prevent the flames to catch on.

Focus on Your Yard

Get rid of dead weeds or any dry vegetation. Clear your yard with these flammable objects. You may also wet them if you will remove them in another time.

Check the foundation of your plants. If you have fits, pines or other conifers in your yard, make sure to trim their branches so they do not touch the ground. The sap in the conifers is a flammable one.

Grow plants that are fire-resistant. First, know what plants are suitable in your area. But, some of the fire-resistant plants are lavender, sycamore, agave, live Oak, salvias, yucca, and eastern redbud.

More Ways to Help Prepare for a Fire

  • Buy a fire extinguisher.
  • Install smoke detectors and change batteries when needed.
  • Take caution when you smoke in your property.
  • Dispose off your trash properly.
  • Avoid using barbecue and fire pits during extremely hot weather.
  • Store your lawnmower and fuel away from your home.

Conclusion

Note that the tips above can help you prepare for a fire and help reduce the damages in case of a fire. But remember, if your home is in the path of a fire or the situation is too hot to handle, then get out fast. Check your homeowner's insurance if fire is included in the policy. Most likely, it is. But, know what is covered. At Brad Spurgeon Insurance Agency Inc., we put our clients first by offering them policies that they can afford. My sister's home is near a factory, which is why she would like to have an alarm system installed in it so it will be easier to detect any fire. Well, aside from this idea, you are also right that adding sand to their paint will help fireproof the said property. Thank you for sharing here as well the importance of trimming the branches too.
