4 Important Things To Know About Flood Insurance

Picture
Everywhere in the world has a chance of flooding and you don’t necessarily have to live in a flood zone to be at risk. You don’t have to experience extreme weather conditions for water to deal damage to your home. A night of heavy rain can already put you at risk of water damages that cost thousands of dollars in repair. In fact, most insurance claims have something to do with flooding in low-risk areas.
It's a good thing that you can get flood insurance coverage to protect you from sudden damages caused by flooding in your home. Here are the things you need to do after flooding occurs in your area.

·         Stay tuned on your local weather channel or radio station for rainfall or flooding with your area even after the storm or hurricane has passed.

·         Do not drink or use tap water to prepare food until you get word from the local government that it’s free from impurities.

·         Check for food spoilage on your refrigerator and throw them out if necessary.

·         If you’ve had to evacuate your home, do not return until the local official tells you that it’s safe.

·         Do not attempt to drive unless it’s proclaimed safe by your local government. Do not pass by bridges and avoid roads that are flooded.

·         Inspect home for damages and take pictures if needed for insurance claims.

Before filing a claim for water damages, you have to make sure that your insurance covers all of them. To give you an idea, here’s everything you need to know about flood insurance and its coverage.

Flood Insurance Coverage

There are two types of coverage for flood insurance; building property and personal property. Most insurance companies allow homeowners to choose a separate limit for building property coverage and personal property coverage. You need to ask your insurance agent about the amount of coverage that they offer.

Low-Cost Flood Insurance Policy

For those who live in low-risk and moderate-risk areas, you can choose from over 80 US insurance companies for a low-cost flood insurance policy accredited by the government. You can check online and ask for quotes to compare each policy and get the most affordable one with the best coverage limits.

Flood Insurance Rates

Depending on the type of coverage that you’re getting as well as the insurance company and coverage limits that you choose, your flood insurance rates may vary. As a homeowner, it’s smart to get both types of insurance coverage to ensure full protection in case of flooding.

Don’t Rely on the Government for Flooding Damages

In the US, before the federal disaster assistance covers your home damages, the President needs to declare your area under a state or major disaster. On the other hand, your flood insurance will cover damages to your home whether or not disaster was declared. Moreover, even if you get assistance from the government, you are only eligible for $4,000 per household.

It's good to know that there are two different types of flood insurance coverage. I'll have to ask my insurance agent about what each of the types includes, like you said. That will help me know which is the best fit for me. I'll also ask them for suggestions on which policies will protect me the most.

Hi Gary, Thank you for your comments.
Private flood works great for about 50% of dwellings, when in Flood Zone V and A. Most private market Insurance carriers, but not all include Replacement Cost coverage.
NFIP/FEMA does not offer replacement cost coverage for "secondary homes" occupancy no longer since 2012, as well limits dwelling coverage to $250k, private market offers up to $1 mill.
Unfortunately most Agents don't have access to private flood insurance market, especially if a Captive Agent and unable to access all markets available.
Let us know if we can help, Thanks Again, Brad Spurgeon

Thank you for pointing out that you are going to want to get coverage depending on your situation. My husband and I are moving to a new house and I'm worried about flooding. I'll have to do some research and find the best flood insurance possible.

Thanks for the tip not to drink tap water. There have been a few storms where I live lately. I'll definitely have to get flood and homeowners' insurance.
