Ten Things Everyone Should Know About Parking Etiquette

If you want to see hot-headed drivers lose it, you only need to find them in the parking lot. Parking etiquette is as important as any lessons in driving.

  1. Park It Right
Lines are there for a reason. Parking spaces are allocated for each vehicle, and all you need to do is watch the lines. It is not uncommon to see drives which could not be bothered to park correctly and instead take up more space or slot than needed.

  2. Be Early
You know it takes time to park your car, so you need to adjust your schedule. Drivers get impatient when waiting for a spot because they are going to be late. And whose fault is it now? It certainly isn't the driver taking his precious time pulling out from the spot or the driver who seems to be lost. If you get frustrated easily in the parking lot, then you need to get a head start.

  3. Giving Out Signals
Make your intentions loud and clear for other drivers. Use your hazard lights to let them know that you are waiting. It avoids becoming an inconvenience to others as well as unnecessary confrontations.

  4. Stop Stealing
The main cause of disagreements in the parking lot is about stealing parking spots. Move along when a vehicle is clearly waiting for that specific spot. No need to challenge them for it. Stop stealing. Don’t be that guy.

  5. Space on The Driver’s Side
Be thoughtful of the space between your car and the driver’s side of the car next to you. It not like they can get into their car without opening their doors.

  6. Watch the Doors
Open your doors gently to avoid hitting the vehicle parked next to you. Ask your passengers to do it as well.

  7. Leave the Handicap Parking Alone
It’s a basic human consideration; skip the handicap parking. If you don’t have a permit that spot isn’t for you.

  8. Follow the Signs
Signs are there for you to follow and not just for decoration. It’s also the same as following the traffic flow in the parking area. Going against it to get to a slot that just opened up is absolutely wrong. You can cause an accident or hold up the flow for everyone else.

  9. Help Out
When you see a driver having a hard time parking, kindly lend a hand. They might need it desperately.

  10. Be Polite and Courteous
No need to vent on random strangers in the parking lot. Don’t forget to say “thanks” or “please” to parking personnel.
