6 Ways To Minimize Accidents At Home

The sad thing about accidents is that no matter how cautious you are, they may still happen, especially when other people around you are not as careful as you are. If you have an elderly person at home, the best way to take care of them is to be extra cautious. Here are some ways to avoid accidents at home.

1. Make sure that everyone in the household is in top shape.

Have a regular periodic check-up to ensure well-being and safety. Your vision, hearing, and motor ability change as you age. Take care of your health.

2. Ensure that every place is well-lit.

Install proper lighting not only to areas where you mostly stay, like in the bedroom or living room. Pay close attention to the lighting in the stairs and bathroom. Night lamps in the house will ensure more safety.

3. Keep floors clean and free from things that may cause tripping.

This often happens when you have elderly and toddlers at home. Make sure that kids keep their toys. If necessary, you may remove rugs in traffic areas.

4. One place where accidents usually happen is in the bathroom.

Floorings may be slippery. Install grab-bars in the toilet and in the shower or bathtub. You may have a bath seat so you may choose to sit down. A rubber mat in the bathtub may minimize the chances of slipping. Also, add a non-skid bath mat beside the tub.

5. Be extra careful in the staircases.

Check the handrails if they are securely fixed. Ensure that all broken stairs are repaired immediately. Repairs may cost you extra bucks, but will keep everybody safe. To help you see better, especially at nighttime, you may add a strip in a contrasting color along the edge of each step.

6. Protect your feet with the proper footwear.

Don’t choose footwear just based on design and style. Choose shoes, boots, and slippers that provide stable support and good soles.

7. Prioritize comfort over style.

If you are uncomfortable with the footwear that you are wearing, the more likely accidents may happen. A cane or a walker may help you walk around the house more comfortably and safely. Make sure that it is appropriate for your height before using it.
