What Does Home Insurance Not Cover?

Homeowners insurance is a necessary product since it covers the structure of a home and its contents. It protects against events such as fire, theft, or other unexpected damages. But a home insurance policy does not cover every possible mishap that could happen in one’s household, such as the following:

  1. Floods
A standard homeowner’s insurance policy would not cover the damage brought by a flood. It has a separate insurance policy which is administered through the National Flood Insurance Program. The maximum amount of coverage available is $250,000 for the home’s structure and $100,000 for the home contents.

  2. Damages from lack of maintenance
Issues that arise from neglecting one’s home, like pest infestation, are generally not covered by a standard homeowner’s insurance policy. It also does not cover damages due to wear and tear.

  3. Land calamity
In most cases, calamities like landslides, earthquakes, and sinkholes are not covered. The following are covered in a separate policy that exists for these types of unfortunate events.

  4. Sewer backups
Damage caused by a sewer backup typically is not covered in a standard home insurance policy. It could occur because of stormwater or raw pipelines of sewage. It may also happen because of tree roots growing, old sewer systems, or blockages of the main sanitary. This type of policy is separate or could be an endorsement of the home insurance policy.

  5. Expensive jewelry
Insurance carriers often limit jewelry coverage to about $1,500. If the policyholder wants to increase the range, he or she should endorse this. However, the jewelry has to be appraised first.
Conclusion

Thus, be sure to review the coverage of the policy undertaken to comprehend its limits and inclusions. The policyholder could double-check with their insurance carrier. Moreover, the policyholder could update their insurance coverage as necessary, for it is best to have adequate coverage.
