Lightning is a serious matter. It kills and injures people every year. Even if it does not hit your house, it can strike near you and create an electrical charge fast. During thunderstorms, it is better to take precaution to prevent injuring yourself from getting hit by lightning.

When Indoors and During a Thunderstorm:
Close the windows and doors.

Do not stand at an open window or door when a thunderstorm is happening. It is not impossible for lightning to travel through your windows. Glass is an effective insulator, but metal is a conductor of electricity. So, avoid touching doorknobs in the event of a storm.

Turn off your electronics.

While a lightning storm is occurring, make sure you do not plug your electronic devices into the wall. The lightning surge can quickly create short circuits. Also, it is much safer if you avoid using corded phones, washing machines, air conditioners, computers, and televisions during a thunderstorm. These appliances are the pathways between you and lightning. Use a mobile phone or cordless phone if you need to call someone.

Preferably, do not take a bath or shower during a storm.

It is easy for lightning to run pass through a water pipe during a storm. Wait for the storm to pass before you take a bath or even use the sink. Toilets are generally made of porcelain, which are safe to use as it is a good insulator. Remember not to touch metal. Also, prevent using the bathtub especially in a bathroom that has no windows. The risk of electrocution is high due to the water pipes.

Install a lightning rod to the roof.

Call a certified technician to do the job as you may do it incorrectly or end up harming yourself. If a lightning strikes your roof, the rod will create a path of resistance and lessen the damage to your home caused by the electric current.

Do not wander into the yard.

Even if you are using an umbrella, it is just a dangerous as going outside without one. If you need to get something outside, better let the storm pass than risk yourself getting hit by lightning.

Conclusion

It is hard to fight the wrath of nature. But, there are ways to prevent yourself and your home from being hit by lightning. Taking preventative measure can also help reduce the damage in case lightning hits your house.
