Does Home Insurance Cover Accidents At House Parties?

November 1, 2022
Friends toasting with drinks at a holiday dinner table with text asking if home insurance covers house party accidents.

Some of life's best moments occur when loved ones are gathered together. Expect the unexpected and be prepared for everything from house fires to slips and falls. That is why purchasing a homeowners policy is one way to prepare. What a homeowners policy will and will not cover is determined by the type of policy you have and the nature of incidents.

Necessary Protections

It is essential to be aware of any risks when throwing a party. Alcohol is frequently used in common group incidents. A standard home policy may not provide adequate protection for a private party, and hosts may want to consider specialized insurance for event liability.

  1. Protection Against Misbehaving Visitors.
Some home insurance policies include legal liability coverage intended to protect the insured and the host if someone is injured on the property. It varies depending on your policies because most event insurance policies do not specifically cover incidents involving alcohol served at the party.

The owner must include liquor liability insurance, a short-term policy only for hired professionals, including bartenders, chefs, and food vendors.

  2. Event Cancellation.
A special event usually requires a major investment; a last-minute cancellation could be disastrous. Insurance can cover expenses imposed if a special occasion, including an anniversary party or wedding, must be postponed unexpectedly due to circumstances above any person's control.

  3. Injuries.
Medical payments coverage is usually included in most home insurance which pays for injuries regardless of fault.

  4. Property Damage.
The more guests you have, the greater the risk of an incident leading to property damage such as broken windows, fire, theft, and vandalism. A homeowner's insurance policy may cover them if the damages exceed your deductible.

Ways To Reduce Liability Risk

When having a party, a little amount of preparedness can significantly reduce the liability and damage risks because relying on a conventional house policy may not be sufficient protection. These are the things to consider:

  • Have lots of food and offer non-alcoholic drinks
  • Hire a professional bartender
  • Offer a private place to stay
  • Have a designated driver
  • Be a responsible host

Conclusion

We have stated a few pointers to help reduce liability risk and how to get the necessary protection. The specifications of a homeowner's insurance policy indicate the expenses the insurer may pay for.
