3 Ways Windstorm Insurance Can Save Your Property

Most regular homeowners insurance doesn't include major disasters like hurricanes, extreme winds, and cyclones. If you live in areas with extremely gusty weather, then you may need windstorm insurance. This is a type of coverage added to standard home insurance. Windstorm insurance is typical in coastal areas and in Midwestern US states where there are extreme weather conditions.

  1. Windstorm Insurance Covers Property Damage
This insurance covers any kind of damage to the property caused by severe storms and strong winds. If a cyclone destroys your roof, then windstorm insurance can pay for the repairs. If a tornado wrecks your home, windstorm insurance can pay for the construction of a new one. However, water damage to your property due to flooding after a windstorm is not covered.

  2. It Covers Damage to Personal Belongings
Windstorm insurance also covers every item inside your home. As these are carefully documented, this type of insurance can pay for repairs when the claim is filed right after the event.

  3. Windstorm Insurance Also Covers Detached Structures
This type of homeowners insurance also provides coverage for any structures that are detached from your home. Structures like garages, tool sheds, and guest houses are covered as long as you state these in your policy.

How To File For A Claim

Windstorm insurance claims should be filed immediately after the event. You must record the date and the time when the storm happened. Look for articles and news videos to support your claim. You must carefully assess all the damages and document them with videos and photographs.

In most states, two professional contractors are required to inspect your property and submit an estimate of all the damages. In case your claim is denied, ask for another evaluation. As a policyholder, you are allowed to consider the help of three insurance adjusters.

Don't have windstorm insurance yet? If you live where windy conditions often occur, don't hesitate to add windstorm coverage to your existing home insurance policy. Consult your insurer right away to get the right plan for your needs.
