Keeping your home constantly safe is no easy task. Unforeseen circumstances can derail you from everyday tasks at home and can also put you and your family at risk. These events happen everyday and there is no way for you to avoid them no matter how hard you try. From bad weather to power outages, from fires and a lot more, here are some best practices to keep your home safer before a problem happens

1. Check the Smoke Detectors

Batteries are important not just for the remote, but most importantly for the smoke detector. It would be a good idea to schedule and regularly replace the batteries. Do not wait for the low-battery warning and regularly test the alarm.

2. Assemble and Keep an Emergency Kit and Basic Tool Box

It's a good practice to have two kinds of kits/packs always ready around the house. An emergency backpack that can be used for a variety of predicaments, and a toolbox for small repairs.

  • Emergency Backpack
    • Any bag that contains basic necessities that can help your survival during times of calamities.  Here are some examples of items that can be part of your kit:
      • First Aid Kit
      • Medicines
      • A set of clothing
      • Rechargeable Lights or Candles with Matches or a Lighter
      • AM Radio (rechargeable or battery operated)
      • Pack of batteries
      • Toiletries
      • Important Personal Documents (Passport, Birth Certificates, etc.)
      • Drinking Water
      • Food (Non-perishable and easy to prepare like canned goods)
      • Cell Phone and Power Banks

  • Basic Tool Box
    • You don't need a handyman for small repairs at home.  From changing light bulbs to tightening screws, a basic set of tools will make your life a lot easier.

3. Fire Extinguisher

Always keep a working Fire Extinguisher in the house. Best place to keep one is in the kitchen as this is where most house fires start. Also, always inspect and make sure it is working.

4. Check Your Roof, Windows and Doors for Leaks

Don't let the bad weather get into your home. Water may seep into the spaces and ruin your home. Make sure your roof, windows, and doors are sealed and free of cracks or holes.

5. Insurance Coverage

Protect yourself and your home with the right insurance coverage. Feel at ease and confident during trying times knowing that your insurance provider has you covered for the worst case scenario.
